NPC 🤖
Short for “Non-Playable Character,” borrowed from video games, where NPCs just follow a script instead of making real choices. In slang, calling someone an NPC means they’re acting mindless, more like robots. It’s usually playful teasing, but it can also be a genuine dig at someone for being a follower with zero opinions of their own.
It crossed into mainstream slang around 2022-2023, boosted by the viral “NPC Streamer” trend on TikTok, where creators livestreamed themselves repeating robotic phrases and movements for donations, cementing the term as shorthand for anyone acting scripted or thoughtless.

How to use it like a pro
Friend watching over*:
Bro why’d you kill that random villager, he wasn’t even attacking you.
Me:
He’s just an NPC, doesn’t matter, he’ll respawn.
Friend:
Everyone’s suddenly obsessed with this random drink flavor.
Me:
People are so NPC, they’ll like anything if enough people post about it.
Friend:
Why does he take five minutes to respond to every text?
Me:
His NPC dialogue is still loading, give him a second.
Friend:
NPC
Me:
Wow, okay, rude.
Friend:
You’ve said “no cap” four times in one sentence, I had to.
Friend:
He said “dude” three times in one sentence again.
Me:
NPC dialogue detected. LOL!
Me:
I just laughed at a joke because everyone else did, not because I actually got it.
Friend:
Full NPC behavior right there.
